We start our exploration of China by first visiting Shanghai. This is perhaps the most modern city in China. We will pass through customs here and travel to our first hotel. If flights are as scheduled, we may arrive in the late afternoon. For those who have energy we may simply explore the area near the hotel. There are always lots to see. This city has a great history. We will see some "old China", but mostly "new-China". However, even "new-China" will seem somewhat foreign. We have no city like Shanghai in the US. It is a mass of people and every inch of space is used. If we have time, we will walk down to the water front, as we may do so often. It is a great place to see China in motion. A good rest will be needed as we begin to feel the effects of an "around the world" time change. Evening here will be early morning at home. Tomorrow we will begin a full day to explore this great city.

Introduction - Student List
Quote from email from David Thomas: Day 1 drifts into Day 2 as we cross the international date line and the 24th turns in the 25th. For us this changed Wednesday into Thursday. It is a long plane ride, but the students are in great spirits. The photos include the remainder of the long flight, entering China through Customs, the bus ride to the Holiday Inn. A walk along the Bund at night. The waterfront of Shanghai. Most of the students are chased by street vendors of fake watches and learn first hand how to bargain. They do quite well and surprisingly, are still working! Our first dinner with some friends of David's currently also in Shanghai gives everyone the chance to experiment with real Chinese cuisine for the first time, and they mastered the chopsticks too! I will be adding pictures as they are sent by email.
